About the experience.
The day heads into the Sierra Madre in open-air Mercedes-Benz Unimog 4x4 trucks, climbing above 2,000 feet into cooler air. The route takes in the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, where guided walks cover giant strangler figs, cacti, orchids and cacao.
In El Tuito, a village founded in the sixteenth century, you walk the center of town and the main church with your guide. Nearby are pre-Hispanic petroglyphs more than 1,200 years old, and a hillside bakery where bread is still baked in a wood-fired oven.
Lunch is a barbecue at an organic farm, with tables set in a cool river, an open bar and a look around a rustic farmhouse. The guides know the region’s history, plants and wildlife, and the open bar carries on in the truck on the way home.
